Probation Labs was founded in 2012 by Dr. Thom Leiding and Dr. Sindra Petersson Årsköld. Our mission is to develop and market solutions that facilitate everyday laboratory work, enabling higher precision to lower cost and enhancing research. Our first product is Probe Drum.
The idea of Probe Drum has sprung out of our own laboratory needs, conducting research at the Department of Chemistry at Lund University, Sweden. Although it was created to facilitate the systematic study of proteins that move protons across membranes, it is a versatile piece of equipment that will serve anyone who needs to monitor a fluid sample with an optical marker, in real time and during chemical change.
Probe Drum was developed as an integrated part of a research program, and the driving force was always the science. Through-out the developing process we were helped by our different backgrounds: Sindra, conducting an academic career with expertise in various kinds of spectroscopy and membrane protein systems, holding a position at the university and bringing in research grants to support their science, and Thom, a PhD student at the time with a background in software development, experience of entrepreneurship and with excellent engineering skills.
Everything I have ever done comes together in Probe Drum – it is the result of combining every skill and every piece of experience I have.

Thom set out to develop [the precursor to Probe Drum] because he was frustrated with the monotony and limitations of extensive titration work. He would rather invent a new machine than do the same lab task three times in a row. But it gave us so much more! The investigations we are able to perform now cover many more options, gives us the full picture of the system we are studying – and the precision is amazing.
